Norwegian company Flocean has reached first water at Flocean One, an industrial-scale subsea desalination system deployed at 500 metres depth off Norway’s west coast, producing up to one million litres of freshwater a day. The system uses natural ocean pressure to drive reverse osmosis, which the company says cuts energy consumption by 40-50% compared with conventional coastal plants and avoids coastal land use, chemical pre-treatment and brine discharge into shallow ecosystems. Flocean reports more than 15 projects in development, including partnerships in Norway and the Maldives.
